You will not be disappointed with BC Smith, I bought LG BE12LU30 because it had the qualities I was looking for an external drive, fast read / write speed for CD, DVD and BD discs from different species. I wanted to print and the ability to be a label on the disc with LightScribe technology. There are not many external Blu-ray drive to rewrite, to choose from, and this after he has just been released in October 2010, was not yet fully tested by end users, but I decided to take a chance on. I was not thrilled with the black and white exterior color scheme, but the device has a solid well built feel. I like the blue read / write activity LED on the front and state that it minimizes the vertical position, the space on the desktop that can be placed. You can use BE12 to your computer via USB 2.0 or eSATA port. I am using the eSATA port for maximum writing speed of 12x using the USB port to drag performance down to 6x. The eSATA connection is capable of 3.000 Mbps to 480 Mbps compared to the USB connection, but the ability to eSATA port is not fully utilized. A short cable is included to convert an internal SATA slot on a motherboard eSATA on the back of a tower computer case. The BE12LU30 is a LightScribe disc, but with the exception of a small LightScribe logo on the back of the cardboard, this feature is not mentioned anywhere in the documentation. You must install the LightScribe system software to use this feature. It is found on the LightScribe site. When this software is installed, the utility LabelPrint automatically detects the presence of a LightScribe disc enabled and connected to provide funds to print the label of your design directly onto the front surface of the disk. You have to flip the disc in the tray to print the label, and apparently there is a sensor to detect the presence of a LightScribe disc in the correct position so that it can do no wrong. Unfortunately, only CDs and DVDs are available at this time with the printable surface of LightScribe. I only used a few times BE12 so far on one occasion to write DVD + R media with a LightScribe label, and once BD-R disk. I used Power2Go burns and application in both cases were managed with few accidents. The drive is fairly quiet too. I wrote 820MB of data on DVD + R at 16x for 15 minutes and 15 minutes to LightScribe label printing. I wrote 6.3 GB of data on a BD-R disc in 72 minutes at 12X maximum speed.
